Male Breast Reduction for Gynecomastia

Male Breast Reduction for Gynecomastia in Chicago IL

A popular cosmetic surgery for men is male breast reduction for gynecomastia. This procedure involves the removal of fatty deposits and glandular tissue from the male breast region.

Gynecomastia can affect men at any age, and it is more common among men who are overweight. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast reduction is the fourth most popular cosmetic surgery among men, with nearly 17,000 procedures performed in 2012 alone.

Causes of Gynecomastia

According to a study recently published by the Mayo Clinic, gynecomastia occurs as the result of a hormonal imbalance where testosterone levels are decreased and estrogen levels are increased. Causes of this imbalance include weight gain, natural hormone changes, use of anabolic steroids, side effects of certain medications, and some health conditions.

Initial Consultation

Before you have surgery, you will meet with the plastic surgeon for an initial consultation. The Chicago plastic surgeon will ask questions about your current health status, your past surgeries, medical conditions, allergies, and medications.

The doctor will ask about your concerns regarding your appearance, take pictures for your medical record, and conduct a physical examination. After discussing the procedure risks and benefits, you will sign a consent form and be scheduled for surgery.

Before the Procedure

If you have a labor job or perform work where you must move about and lift, you will need to take off 2-3 weeks. For men with sedentary jobs, you can return to work in a week, so make preparations. Also, arrange to have someone drive you home from the surgical center. Certain blood-thinning medicines must be held for 2 weeks before surgery, so discuss this with your doctor.

During the Procedure

Depending on the surgeon’s choice, the male breast reduction can be done using several different techniques. Most surgeries are performed using general anesthesia, so you won’t feel any pain, and you will not remember the procedure. After your chest area is shaved and cleaned, a local anesthetic is used to numb the skin and deeper tissues. This will help with postoperative pain.

The plastic surgeon in Chicago will make small incisions to insert a hollow cannula under the skin. Liposuction techniques are often used to remove fat and glandular tissue. After all removal of tissue is complete, the incisions are closed with sutures. A small drain may be positioned under each breast to remove fluid. Bandages and a compression garment is applied.

After the Procedure

When you awake from the procedure, a nurse monitors you for 30-45 minutes. Once your vital signs are stable, the nurse shows you how to empty drains and gives you discharge instructions. Once you are home, you should:

  • Avoid strenuous activities and raising arms up for 2-3 weeks.
  • Rest and move about your home for usual activities.
  • Avoid soaking in a tub, pool, or sauna until wounds are healed.
  • Return for a follow-up appointment in 3-7 days for sutures, bandages, and drains to be removed.

Outcomes and Results

In a study spanning six years, 126 men underwent male breast reduction. Of these men, 88% presented with bilateral gynecomastia (both sides of the chest). After the procedure, all patients reported improved quality of life and were satisfied with the results. The complication rate was very low in this study.
