Plastic Surgery 101

Plastic Surgery 101

In the United States, there were 290,000 breast augmentations, 235,000 liposuction procedures, 223,000 rhinoplasties, and 209,000 eyelid surgeries in 2015 alone. Men are getting more cosmetic procedures than ever before, with 40% breast reduction surgeries for men. In the U.S., a recent report found a 5% increase in plastic surgery over the last year.

What is the most common procedure during the pre-adolescent years?

Many adolescents wish to restore or reshape the appearance of their ears (otoplasty). This is a common procedure for children age 10 and younger. When a child’s ears stick out, it can cause much social embarrassment. Otoplasty is a simple procedure that involves pinning the ears back through reconstructive processes.

Nose surgery (rhinoplasty) and scar revision are the two most common surgeries performed during the teen years. A prominent nose can mean much stress and low self-esteem for a teenager. Teens who desire rhinoplasty much wait until their facial skeletons are 80% of the adult size. This surgery is often performed on females ages 16 to 17.

What procedures are done when people are in their 20s?

For men and women in their 20s, rhinoplasty is common. In addition, many women in this age group have breast reductions to alleviate back pain. Men with gynecomastia (large breast tissue) often opt for a breast reduction due to aesthetic purposes. Liposuction is also popular among people in their 20s. This procedure achieves optimal results for this age group due to good skin tone and elasticity that goes with being young.

What plastic surgeries are common for people in their 30s?

In the 30s, women often seek out breast augmentation and breast lifts. These procedures are usually performed after pregnancy. Tummy tucks (abdominoplasties) are also performed after pregnancy to tighten skin around the middle area and repair stretched abdominal muscles. Also, during the 30s, many people desire liposuction to correct hard to tone areas of the body, such as the upper arms, abdomen, and thighs.

What surgeries are popular among those who are middle-aged?

People in their 40s and 50s seek procedures that will restore a youthful look. Common plastic surgeries for middle-aged people are breast lifts, tummy tucks, and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). Many choose to have neck lifts and face lifts at this age as well.

What procedure has increased the most over the last year?

From 2015 to 2016, breast reconstructive procedures have increased by 4%, with more than 106,000 surgeries performed in the U.S. alone. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons believes that this occurred due to a campaign to promote the procedure following mastectomy and breast cancer diagnosis.

What is involved in a facelift?

One of the most common procedures for women is the facelift. This consists of fixing lower face issues, such as sagging jowls and restoring a rejuvenated appearance. Skin and soft tissues have a downward trend with age, and the forehead often has a permanently angry look. A brow lift will restore a relaxed forehead and eliminate horizontal forehead lines. Another portion of the surgery is the eyelid surgery, which fixes drooping lids and removes puffy bags below the eyes.
